Hansel's Story

This is the story of a young boy, who lived with his father and his little sister. The boy’s name was Hansel and he loved his family. Hansel’s father was often busy at work so he took care of his sister Gretel. One day his father said they were going to take a walk in the forest, the boy was very excited to spend time with his father. Hansel and Gretel decided to pack a lunch for the family to eat . They packed apples and some bread. The family had been walking for a long time and the sun was starting to set. Hansel’s father told his children he was going to make a phone call and would be right back. The children waited and waited, until the sun had gone and the moon was high.

Gretel began to cry and Hansel said to not worry and began to think of a plan. He decided to look for help, the children began walking and after what felt like forever the two came upon a small cabin. Hansel could smell the baking of sweets and his stomach began to growl. His sister had also smelt the food and began walking towards the home. Hansel looked into the windows, and saw a small old woman hunched over an oven. He gave three rapid knocks on the door, a few moments later the old woman opened the door with a surprised look.

After Hansel had explained what happened to the old lady she welcomed them to come stay with her till their father came back. The old woman’s name was Ginger, she told the children they could call her Granny if they would like. Hansel and Gretel ate a feast of sweets and pot pies, content and sleepy Gretel fell asleep on her brothers lap. Hansel looked at Ginger and she gave him a smile, Hansel for some reason could not help, but feel uneasy. He gave a small smile back and asked if there was a place for the two to sleep. Ginger brought them to a small cot by the fireplace, she then left. Hansel put his sister down and laid on the other side of the cot, he was just about asleep when he looked up and saw Ginger standing over him. He jerked himself up and asked her what she was doing. She held up a blanket and told him she didn’t want the two to get cold. She handed him the blanket and gave him a gentle smile, she said goodnight and went to her room. Hansel covered his sister and himself with the blanket and slowly fell asleep.

Two weeks had passed, since Hansel and Gretel had moved in with Ginger. Hansel had slowly warmed up to the old woman. Gretel on the other hand absolutely adored the woman. By the third day she had begun calling her Granny G. The children had also gained quite a bit of weight since their stay, Gretel now had full cheeks and meat on her bones. Hansel could tell the little girl was happy here, but he still couldn’t shake the feeling of wanting to go home to their father. Hansel had asked Ginger if she had a phone and she had told him the phone no longer worked.

It was a beautiful spring day and Hansel had gotten sick of staying indoors, he proposed that they all go outside for a picnic. His real reason for going out was to find his father, he was hoping that maybe he had come back to look for them. After some coaxing Hansel had convinced Ginger and Gretel to go out with him. They began walking until they came to the very same clearing that Hansel and Gretel had been with their father last. A few hours passed, and Gretel had begun to get sleepy. Ginger suggested they go home for the night, but Hansel told her he wanted to stay out for just a bit longer. Ginger smiled and nodded, they stayed for some time longer, until Gretel said she wanted to go back. Disheartened Hansel gave a deep sigh and they all began their walk back. They were a few feet away from the clearing when they heard a male voice.

Hansel could feel his heart racing, and without a second thought began running towards the voice. He ran to the clearing and there stood his father. Hansel in all his emotions began to cry and ran into his fathers arms. He felt his father hold him tightly, and heard him repeating himself with the phrase “I’m sorry”. After a few moments, Hansel’s father pulled the two apart and asked Hansel where Gretel was. Hansel grabbed his fathers hand and led him towards Gingers cabin, explaining what had happened to the two over the past two weeks. His father never said anything and just kept walking his face solemn.

They had finally arrived and Hansel knocked and opened the door, sitting at the table was Gretel and Ginger. Ginger introduced herself to Hansel’s father, she invited him to stay for supper. He agreed and sat down, Hansel sat next to him and they began to eat. After they had eaten, Hansel’s father asked Ginger if they could talk, away from the children. Hansel thought it was odd, but decided not to think too much about it. He went to the fireplace and read his sister a book while they waited for their father to come back.

Hansel’s father came back from his talk with Ginger. Excited to finally go home Hansel popped up and went to his father. He happily asked his father “Are we going home now?”. Hansel saw the look on his Fathers face and felt his hear sink. His father sat the two children down and explained that Ginger loved them very much and wanted them stay with her. Hansel upset by this said that he hated Ginger and that she was an evil old witch. “I want to go home with you!”, the young boy begged his father. Hansel’s father looked at his son and after a deep sigh said “If you really think you’ll be happy living with me, then you can come home.” Hansel cheered happily, he gave his father a big hug. He then went to his sister telling her how they were going home. Hansel was shocked by his sister when she said “I don’t want to go home, I want to stay with Granny, this is home now.”. Hansel became saddened and angered by his sisters words. “You have to come home! With me and father! That’s where you belong!”, Hansel stated in a defiant tone. Gretel only shook her head and hugged tightly to Ginger. Hansel could not believe that this was happening, he looked to his father expecting him to do something. He only looked sadly at Gretel and then grabbed Hansel’s hand and told him they were leaving. Hansel followed his father in shock, he turned to look back at the cabin one last time. He saw Gretel and Ginger standing in the doorway waving goodbye.

That was the last time Hansel ever saw Gretel.
